  • What is a DRO?

    • DRO stands for Digital Read Out. A digital readout system digitally displays a machine tool's exact position on an electronic display board.

  • What can a DRO do for me?

    • A digital readout system can greatly simplify your work, save time, reduce costly mistakes and allow you to produce more accurate, exacting parts. Without a DRO system, an operator must count the number of hand wheel revolutions to determine exact position of a tool head against the table. For example, some milling machine lead screws are graduated at 16 threads per inch (TPI), which means that for every turn of the hand wheel the table moves 1/16" (.0625), therefore it takes 16 turns to move the table exactly 1". Other machines are calibrated at 10 TPI, meaning it takes 10 hand wheel revolutions for the table to travel an inch. On the Z axis, it is typical for each division to represent .002", where one full revolution is equal to .060". Needless to say, it can quickly become quite confusing! The bottom line is that with a digital display, the days of counting hand wheel revolutions are over. Simply turn the display on and you're ready to go!

  • How do I choose right DRO for my requirement?

  • Why Electronica magnetic encoders are better than other manufacturers?

    • Electronica has its own developed magnetic tape and encoders. Electronica has its own magnetic tape manufacturing setup. This offers customized solutions for special requirements - like special reference marks, single reference marks, non-standard scale lengths, different resolutions and better accuracy classes for high precision applications. All magnetic encoder products are IP67 rated.

  • What is the benefit of IP67 rating for magnetic encoders?

    • IP67 rating refers to Ingress Protection class with first numeral 6 referring to dust contamination and second numeral 7 refers to liquid contamination. IP67 rating assures you that neither dust nor liquid like coolant, oil will affect the performance of magnetic encoder. You need not care about oil leakage over the encoder due to machining process. For more details, refer to standards and certifications at the bottom of this page.

  • Can you supply a graphical DRO?

    • Yes. We have both FSTN mono (blue & white) and TFT (full colour) LCD displays that provide unparalleled functionality. Ideal for power users these are also ideally suited for college and universities as they have full context sensitive help. They also provide a range of inspection functions, such as part measurement such as height, width, angle, bore diameter etc

  • What about compatibility with other competitor DRO systems?

    • In addition to being able to supply complete DRO systems we are able to provide compatible digital readout and linear encoders as service replacements for many popular brands, including replacements for 11uA & 1Vpp with 40um optical grating, DRO for ball scale inductive encoder. EMS also offers variety of adapter lead sets with matching pin connections for easy installations.

  • How can I upgrade my existing EMS product?

      There are two options -
    • You can check with our service executive for software upgrades compatible with your existing product hardware version.
    • We also offer buy back solutions where you can replace your old EMS product with latest updated product.


  • Can I use a DRO on my Profile projector / Optical comparator?

    • Yes, you can use a DRO on Profile projector / Comparator to measure line, Circle, Distance etc on the test piece. There are many benefits of using a DRO on the projector like doing the actual measurement of the test piece, increasing the speed of inspection and reducing operator fatigue.

  • What is the product range available to be used with Profile projector / Optical comparators from Electronica?

    • Electronica can provide digital read out systems and linear encoders suitable for applications in profile projectors/optical comparators. The digital read outs cover complete range from low cost low featured Digital read out EL250 to higher featured EL500 and CMS2000 PC based 2D software. The EL250 covers only the basic measurements of point, line, circle, distance, angle and skew measurements whereas the EL500 and CMS2000 covers constructions, programming, Tolerencing and auto edge detection using fiber optic measurements. CMS2000 also supports SPC and direct DXF export feature. Electronica can supply their encoders from their optical encoders as well as from Magnetic encoders with resolution of 0.5µ, 1.0µ etc. The optical encoders can also support resolution of 0.1µ.

  • Does Electronica DROs be interfaced to encoders from other manufacturers having analog 1Vpp or 11µApp outputs?

    • Yes, Electronica have special models in EL500 and CMS2000 to be interfaced with standard analog output encoders with 1Vpp or 11µApp.

  • Does Electronica DRO support auto edge detection feature?

    • Yes, Electronica models EL500 and CMS2000 supports Auto edge detection feature using a fiber optic cable. The fiber optic cable and the special sensor placed inside the DRO detects the edge on the profile projector screen and probes a point automatically. The DRO can work from light to dark and dark to light without any selection giving good accuracy and repeatability. This feature can work with wide variety of magnifications right from 5X/10X to 50X magnifications (we have tested up to 100X with certain profile projectors).

  • Does CMS2000 PC based software comes with a encoder interface box?

    • Yes, CMS2000 PC based software comes with an encoder interface box which communicates with the PC via USB. This is included in the standard scope of supply and is not required to be ordered separately.

  • Does CMS2000 PC based software support 64Bit operating systems?

    • Yes, CMS2000 PC based software supports 64bit operating system as well. It can work on a Windows Xp 32 / 64bit and Windows 7 32/64bit.


  • What is the range of Height gauges available?

    • Electronica has a very wide range of height measuring instruments covering manual machines as well as motorized machines with both 1D measuring machines and 2D measuring machines. Electronica height gauges cover application for both Shop floor and Calibration laboratory requirements.

  • What should be the Calibrations frequency for the machine?

    • It depends on the usage of the machine for example How many hours per day are you using the machine. Normally we recommend customers to calibrate it once in a year. Electronica provides calibration services.

  • What is the maximum long length probe Electronica can provide?

    • Platina and Ultima models support length up to 300mm. Other models supports probe length up to 100mm.

  • What is difference between manual & motorized machine?

    • Manual machine comes with hand wheel where the operator has to operate the machine with hand wheel. Whereas motorized machine operates automatically.

    • Platina model of height gauge provides best accuracy in the range with 1.9µm @ 600mm measuring height.

  • What type of surface plate can I use?

    • Granite surface plate with Grade '0' accuracy should be used for the height gauge. Cast iron surface plate cannot be used as air bearing movement requires full flat surface plate which is not available in cast iron surface plate.

  • Can height gauge be used in a Press shop?

    • Yes, height gauge can be used in a Press shop provided the surface plate of height gauge is installed on an isolated ground.

  • Can we use Electronica height gauge to do Scribing work?

    • No, Electronica height gauge should not be used for scribing work.

  • Does Electronica height gauge support multiple languages?

    • Yes, Electronica height gauge supports multiple languages like French, Italian, Chinese, Czech and many more.







  • What is difference between yours and Other makes?

    • Our machine are manufactured with all three axes in black granite. Machines manufactured with granite have more thermal stability.
    • Granite machine has a longer life & accuracies are retained for a longer period due to less wear of granite material.
    • Our machines have Air bearings made in Steel as compared to other makes.
    • The basic surface plate has 9 point support.

  • Which standards do you follow for calibration CMM?

    • Our CMM has accuracies as per ISO-10360-2.

  • Difference between Manual & CNC CMM?

    • Manual CMM is operated with hand wheels & CNC consists of Motors, Drivers & Joystick. Rest of all the things remain the same for e.g. Software, Probing system.

  • What should be the Calibrations frequency for the machine?

    • It depends on the usage of the machine for eg. How many hours per day the machine is used. Normally we recommend customers to calibrate it once in a year.

  • What kind of Probing systems be interfaced with Electronica CMM?

    • We support all Renishaw probing system for example touch trigger (TP20, TP200), scanning probe (SP25, SP80), 5 axes motorized probes (PH20 and Revo).

  • Can we get a CMM with a Camera system and probing system combined?

    • Yes Electronica can manufacture Multi-sensor CMM with Camera and probing system.

  • What are the sizes available in CMM?

    • Electronica manufactures CMM from 400 X 600 X 400 mm up to 1000 X 2000 X 900 mm as standard models. Other special size models can be manufactured on request.

  • Can we get software for Electronica CMM which can import and export CAD files like DXF, IGES, and STEP?

    • Yes, Electronica offers software which can import and export CAD files like DXF, IGES, and STEP.

  • Do Electronica provide calibration services?

    • Yes, Electronica provide Calibration services along with Application related services.

  • Does Electronica provide retrofitting services for old CMM machines of any make?

    • Yes, Electronica can provide retrofitting services on any old CMM of any make and any size.







  • What is the difference between Profile projectors (Optical Comparators) & VMM?

    • Profile Projector works on shadow base, while VMM work on real image base.
    • In Profile Projector, it is difficult to measure images of blind holes, while VMM being camera based measurements it is possible for us to measure all dimensions seen by camera.
    • Profile projector cannot be supplied with Coaxial lighting whereas VMM can support coaxial lighting system.
    • In VMM you can generate Graphical / Tabulated report directly, which is not possible in profile projector.
    • VMM can precisely measure edges of the image using Auto edge detection feature giving accurate, repeatable measurements. This is not possible in Profile projectors.
    • VMM has an advanced programmable lighting system compared to Profile projectors.
    • Programs can be generated in VMM's in case of similar jobs are to be measured.
    • Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a standard feature of Vision Machines.
    • Import of DXF data is possible in case of VMM's. Import of DXF data can be used for Actual to nominal Best Fit comparison of a 2 D profile.
    • VMMs are also available in CNC for automatic batch measurements. This is not possible in profile projectors.

  • What is difference between manual Vision machine & Vision machine with manual XY and Motorized Z-axis with auto focus?

    • Manual Machine comes with Manual movement handles on all three axes. The image focusing in case of manual machine needs to be done by manual movement of the Z axis and adjusting the height in such a way that the autofocus bar comes in green zone from red zone. The software will indicate the Z height where the image is sharp and the RED FOCUS bar turns GREEN. The user then needs to stop the Z axis movement in this height where the FOCUS BAR is at green area. This involves skill of the person using the machine to get proper results. Such machines are not supplied by Electronica.
    • In case of Manual machine with Auto Focus option, the Z axis is controlled by motorized movement. The focusing of the camera is done using the intelligence of the software. The machine in this case scans the image in Z axis in motorized movement to find the best focus. Once the machine scans the best focus zone it automatically stops at the image which is sharper and clearer. All manual machines supplied by Electronica have Auto focus as a standard feature.

  • How much area will camera capture at a time?

    • In our Vision machine 1/3" Camera is a standard supply where the field of view (FOV) diagonal distance it can measure is 6 mm as shown in the below picture. This distance is measured at 1 X zoom of the lens. We use a lens with 0.7X to 4.5X zoom levels where the diagonal distance that can be measured is
      • Minimum field of view (FOV) => 1.4 mm at 4.5X Zoom
      • Maximum field of view (FOV) => 8.5 mm at 0.7X Zoom
    • Other Cameras and lenses for different field of view can be supplied on request.

  • What is the Magnification of Our VMM?

    • In VMM's there are two types of magnifications.
      • Optical Magnification: This is the actual magnification of the Optical System (Lens). The optical Magnification of the machine is 0.7X to 4.5X (Std). Optional Magnification is also available on request.
      • Onscreen magnification: This is the magnification specified by all manufacturers. This is the magnification of the image shown on the screen and so is called as onscreen magnification. The on screen magnification depends on the size of the monitor used to view the image on the software
        Onscreen magnification = (Camera Image size on the monitor) / (Camera Sensor Size)
      • For example if a camera Displays a 6 mm object at 1X and the image size on the monitor is 150mm (18.5" Monitor) then the onscreen magnification is 150/6 = 25X. In this case the Magnification can increase or decrease depending on the screen size. On 18.5" Monitor with standard lens the onscreen magnification can be from 17X to 112X.
      • In Video measuring machines the on screen magnification has NO relevance in measurements as compared to profile projectors (optical comparators). Here the measurements are based on the optical magnification from 0.7X to 4.5X.

  • What type of lens is used in VMM?

    • We use a Zoom Lens with a Optical Magnification of 0.7X to 4.5X (Ratio 1:6) as standard
    • Following Lens are available as an option.
      • 0.6X to 5X (Ratio 1:8.3) with coaxial lighting
      • 0.7X to 4.5X (Ratio 1:6) motorized Zoom lens
      • 1X to 12X (Ratio 1:12) motorized Zoom lens

  • Can we check the depth with Electronica VMM?

    • It is possible to check the depth through our special Electronic depth measurement probe (EDP). This is a unidirectional probing system specially designed to measure depths in case of Vision machines with extremely High Accuracy and Repeatability.
    • It is also possible to measure the depths with contactless measurement using Camera auto focus function.

    • Yes, Electronica VMM supports touch trigger probing system in both manual and CNC machines.

  • What are the sizes available in VMM?

    • Electronica can manufacture VMM from 150 X 100 X 100 mm up to 400 X 300 X 300 mm in 'C' frame construction. Higher sizes can be supplied on request in bridge type construction.







  • Why should I prefer Electronica Kits with magnetic encoders for my mill/ lathe/ grinder machines?

    • Electronica has vast experience in installing its DRO and scales on variety of machine makes and models. Using this experience, Electronica has evolved bracket sets which are suitable for almost all standard machine varieties in Mill / Lathe / Grinder operations.

      Electronica provides these kits with its proven magnetic encoders which are suitable for harsh environments (with IP67 rating) where standard glass scales (with IP54 rating) fail repeatedly. Electronica magnetic encoders perform in standard accuracy grades which are suitable for these conventional machine tools.

      Longer life and guaranteed performance are features of these DRO and magnetic encoder kits.

  • What are the standard accessories provided with these kits?

    • Kit contains DRO and magnetic encoders of suitable lengths selected as per ordering codes. Along with that it contains bracket sets for each axis, single arm stand for DRO mounting and scale covers cut to required lengths as per axes.

  • Do I have options for other stands for DRO?

    • Electronica supplies single arm stand as a standard but other variety is also available and can be ordered as a special request along with Kit ordering.

  • I am ordering kit for my new machine but I do not have any experience for installation?

    • Electronica kits come with installation manual where installation drawings are provided with detailed description and hardware list. It also includes list of standard tools which may be required during installation. Even if you are trying this for first time with DIY approach, you can use this kit documentation to complete your installation all by yourself.

  • Are non-standard lengths available apart from standard codes given?

    • Yes, if you have a machine with non-standard slide lengths, you can communicate with us to fulfill your requirement.

  • Can I have kits suitable for longer length lathe machines?

    • Electronica covers longer length lathe slides due to its jointed guided magnetic scales in open extrusion type magnetic encoders. This is a requirement where glass scale kits are not suitable due to length restrictions.

  • Do I have options for DROs with different functionality suitable for my requirements?

    • You may wish to have a simple digital readout on your machine or higher end readout with full functionality. Keeping this in mind, Electronica offers three different Digital readouts - EL300, EL400 and EL700. You have a choice to select as per your machine requirements.
